Ghaziabad. The Supreme Court has given its verdict in the matter of granting minority educational institution status to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). On Friday (8 November 2024), a constitutional bench of 7 judges overturned the 57-year-old decision by a majority of 4:3. The bench said that AMU is entitled to minority status under Article 30 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court itself had said in its 1967 decision that AMU is a central university. Hence, it cannot be considered a minority institution.
