COVID-19 infection can damage the heart, even without directly infecting it. This research finds severe lung infection causes immune cells called “cardiac macrophages” to become inflammatory, harming the heart. Blocking this inflammatory response in mice preserved heart function, suggesting a potential new therapy for COVID-19 complications.
